Still On Mr President`s Support For Teachers` Competency Test In Kaduna – By Adamu Yusuf

Indeed I agreed with competency test for teachers, but to be fair to teachers allover Nigeria , most of them and their thinking faculty have been reduced to poor reasoning arising from lack of salary payment to enhance there malnutrition intake and care for their essential needs.

A typified example of this narrative, is that most refugees that lack malnutrition can hardly recognized there children , not to talk about the skill the have learned overtime.

Conditions of Nigeria teachers in most states are worse than the refugees, because the refugee are cared for in multifaceted approach to revive their sense of Worth and well being.

As for the unpaid teachers, who cares for them and their concerns? Nigeria teachers are pained and stressed in all facets of life_ no food to care for children and money to care for there children education, make no mistake, people in such psychological distress will not pass the simplest test_ psychology will tell better.

I agreed with Mr. President that the glory of our school has fallen, hence his support for competency test, but in all ramifications something is responsible for the current decayed in our schools, unlike the examples he gave in the past where teachers treated schools children like their own children. In those old good days when teachers were not owed salary, life was easy, their income was enough to care for there needs, no 20%/30%/40% salary.

They went for regular training and refresher courses. Those were the motivating factors that produced the right attitudes of teachers our president spoke about.

Those motivating factors that produces right attitude of teacher and teaching skills were witnessed even in the military era.

The sorry state of our schools started with the advent of our unbreakable Democratic dispensation with the attended consequences of unbridled corruption and primitive acquisition of wealth by our political elites.

From 1999, Nigeria teachers have suffered in the hands of political elites , salary are not pay, study environment are not improved, endless circles of staff screening are use to denied them of their salary and arrears, quarter and half salary are pay in some cases.

Worse of it all , some state governors fraudulently enforced teachers in there state to sign off arrears they inherited from past administrations ( Kaduna and IMO state) in focus for such obnoxious policy.

To be fair to some APC governors who came at the time of economic recession and no thanks to previous administrations who stole teachers salaries and reaped them off of there labor income as at the time Nigeria was in economic booming, teachers have the worse of their profession under this Democratic dispensation with strong hallow effects on there intellectual capacity which is unjustly put to test by the same political elites that subject them to abject poverty and psychological distress and disorder.

The current administration under president Buhari saw the need to revive schools back to his old glory and the important to rescue teachers from there distress that have reached a declaration of emergency on the conditions of teachers, he godly reviewed there conditions and released three instance of bailouts to address the unpaid salary and arrears of workers, particularly teachers, what followed by revelation of Efcc, that majority of state chief executive fraudulently diverted the funds for something else, which can’t be pointed at, and teachers are still left in the cold of abject poverty and psychological distress and disorder.

Now that there is serious advocacy on the demand for the the bailouts, couple with the election that is fast approaching, the governors are coming up with monkey skills of competency test as a diversionary to the demand of accountability over the bailouts funds and most feeble minded Nigeria are clapping for them over the penury and ruined of our teachers. Is so sad!

Worthy of note is the Niger state governor , a visionary and vibrant leader, the governor use the bailouts judiciously and he upsets the unpaid salary and arrears of all state workers, also Niger state worker has been receiving full salary since he came to power, those are the kind of leader we deserved in our society. Leaders that make people the center focus of his administration.

On objective defend of the teachers, I want to believe if competency test is conducted in Niger state, 85% of teachers will pass, due to the fact that they are in right frame of mind and sound psychological well-being.

Indeed Niger state governor is the ideal political elites of our time in Nigeria. He is a good resources manager that need to be celebrated annually.

This praise is with due respect to rich state like Lagos , Rivers etc that have been caring for their teachers in welfare ,training and refresher courses.

WAY FORWARD;
1. SMILE SHOULD BE PUT ON THE FACES OF OUR TEACHERS IN ORDER TO REKINDLE HOPE IN THEM, ALL THEIR SALARY AND ARREARS SHOULD BE PAID.

2. TEACHERS SHOULD IMMEDIATELY BE SENT TO TRAINING AND REFRESHER COURSES WHICH THEY HAVE BEEN DENIED OF FOR OVER 15 YEARS.

3. GOVERNORS SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE ON THE NEED TO REVIVE AND IMPROVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT VIA SUPEB.

4.SALARY OF TEACHERS SHOULD BE UPWARD REVIEW LIKE THE WAY GHANA DID.

5. THERE SHOULD BE PRESIDENCY AWARD FOR GOVERNORS THAT BEST CARE AND PROMOTE BETTER ATTITUDE OF TEACHERS IN OUR SOCIETY. AND I BELIEVE NIGER STATE GOVERNOR NEED TO BE COMMENDED FIRST. THUS THIS WILL SPUR OTHER GOVERNOR TO DO MORE.

Finally, competency test for teachers will be supported by all if the needful is done as it is currently being done in Niger state.

The question most people are asking now is. what manner of test shall populist conduct for our political elites whose quest for corruption and primitive acquisition of wealth have no end, thus denying their citizens basic necessities of life.

Just like one foreign scholars opined on the state of corruption in Nigeria, ” He said Nigerian political elites need psyche and hard drugs abuse test before allow them to vie for public office,  he analyse the unlimited Nigerian elites corruption to be liking to insatiable desire for drug abuse”.

He further stated, that those who abuse hard drugs are sensitive to people`s need and service, and all they care for is me! Me! , hence the primitive acquisition and stealing of public funds.

I indeed agreed with the scholar`s assertion, experience shows that drug addiction , like inordinate corruption of our political elites , are concerns with self and source of his drugs use and supply.

I support that politicians should undergo drug use test before contesting any political office, if we want corruption to be tamed. Hence the punitive and treacherous competency test in Kaduna state and other intended states must be put to stop ,pending when the needful is done by respective state governor.
